Day Trading vs Swing Trading – Which Is Better For Forex Prop Firm Trading.

There are many different ways to trade the forex market, with more strategies and methods than ever before. Two of the most popular methodologies are Day Trading and Swing Trading. These refer to the length of time you’re active in trades. Both Day Trading and Swing Trading have their pros and cons, depending on your trading strategies, lifestyle factors, and what you’re looking to achieve from forex trading.

Although one is not better than another, as a newbie trader, I’d recommend sticking to Swing Trading, rather than dabbling in Day Trading.

In this article, we will look specifically at prop firms and explain whether it’s best to Day Trade, or Swing Trade if you’re wanting to become a funded trader! Let’s get into it…

Day Trading Vs Swing Trading.

Before we look at the pros and cons of both forms of trading, it’s important to be fully aware of what these styles actually mean. I see newbie traders seemingly very confused about the difference between the various trading styles. Day trading is where you, the trader, buy or sell leveraged products and exit the position within a single day of trading. This means you rarely hold positions overnight or over the weekend. You’ll typically see Day Traders profiting from very small moves in currency prices.

Swing trading is where you buy or sell a leveraged product and hold that trade for over one day, with the hope of profiting from a larger price movement than Day traders would do. In simple terms, if you’re opening and closing a trade within one day, you’re most likely day trading. If you’re holding on for much longer, you’re most likely swing trading.

So, which of these styles is better for prop firm trading?

The Pros – Day Trading.

There are some pros of day trading that make it the most popular trading style amongst retail investors around the world…

No patience is required. As a day trader, you don’t need to sit and hold out for your profits for 6 months – you’re able to get into trades and out of trades within a few hours which is much more satisfying. High frequency of trading opportunities. Day traders typically see at least one trade every day within the markets. You get to ‘feel like a trader’ . As you’re constantly watching profits, losses, and the charts, you feel like a real trader. Traders that are less active in the markets and have less open positions might potentially feel more like investors, rather than active traders. Potentially higher profits . If you’re able to day trade profitably, there’s no doubt in my mind that you’ll make more profits than swing traders. Due to the way compound interest works, you’ll be much better off as a day trader! However, I wouldn’t recommend it!

The Pros – Swing Trading.

My personal favorite when it comes to trading styles. Let’s take a look at some of the pros…

Little time invested . Whereas day traders need to be in the markets every day, swing traders can go days without checking the charts – this works perfectly for those with a family or balancing jobs. No small fluctuations. By focusing on large moves in the markets, you can ignore all of the overwhelming noise that retail traders usually have to deal with. Thinking longer term . As your trades are longer term, you typically think longer term as well – this is a great trait to have as an investor/trader. Less likely to strategy hop . If you’re staring at the charts all day, every day, it’s human nature to start recognizing things and want to change your strategy. This is a dark hole to go down and something traders get crippled with! Less likelihood of human error . With hours to analyze trades, rather than minutes, you’re much less likely to see any kind of human error whilst swing trading. Technically, easier . Due to the lack of human error and lack of stress associated with swing trading, coupled with the longer-term moves/no fluctuations, swing trading has a higher success rate than day trading!

The Cons – Day Trading.

Whilst there are a lot of pros for trading this way, there are also a lot of cons that need to be considered before you take on your prop firm funding…

Everyone seemingly loves day trading, however, there are a lot of cons you need to be aware of…

Very low chance of success . It’s said that over 75% of day traders lose money in the markets as this is one of the hardest ways to trade any market. Huge time commitment. When day trading, you need to be constantly checking on the news and the markets. This leads to traders needing to work part-time or even become full-time traders before they’re ready, just to keep up with the demands of day trading. Requires rapid analysis. As the markets move so fast on the lower time frames, you need to be able to perform complex analysis, under pressure. The drawdown can be large. Trading frequency and volume tend to be much higher with day traders, meaning you’ll have the possibility of taking 5-10% drawdowns in a single day/week if you’re running the standard 1% risk per trade model that most retail traders work to. For tips on managing drawdown in prop firm challenges, have a read of our new article! Hindsight analysis. As the markets move so fast for day traders, you’ll often lose a trade and then realize something was wrong, after the fact. This eats away at day traders and causes them to change their trading strategies, constantly. Shiny ball syndrome. This is something that most retail day traders are guilty of… constantly changing their forex trading strategies each week after taking a few losses.

The Cons – Swing Trading.

Now we’ve looked at the large list of cons for day trading, where does swing trading fall short?

Low frequency of opportunities. Swing traders typically don’t see many trades coming, especially compared to scalpers and day traders. Whilst this is a negative, most of the trades coming for day traders will be invalid against their trading plans and they’ll spend a lot of wasted time on these setups. Longer timeframe to compound. By the laws of compounding, you’re better off seeing small profits coming in frequently than one large profit every few weeks. This leads to why it can take longer to compound a trading account with swing trading, than day trading. If you’re curious about realistic forex returns, have a read here! Swap fees. As you’ll be holding trades for a long period of time, you’ll accrue swap fees. These could be positive or negative, depending on the currency pair you’re trading. These fees are still going to be negligible in the grand scheme of a successful trade. Requires patience. Swing trades can be left open for months at a time so you need to be able to execute a huge level of patience, even when you see large floating profits in your MT4 terminal.

We’ve recently published a full guide on how to get a funded account as a swing trader. It may be worth a read!

Trading Around Your Lifestyle.

One of the most important aspects of building momentum in any facet of life is to do something that molds easily to your lifestyle. To create the least possible chance of failure, you need to ensure that you’re easily able to trade and manage your positions in the markets without having too much difficulty or letting it affect your normal daily life. For instance, I work full-time and trade alongside. It would be impossible for me to be a day trader when I’m in meetings for 6-8 hours every day. I’d never have a chance to check the market movements or manage my risk in trades. However, I’m always around at 10 pm each night. This is when the daily candle closes here in the UK. This means I’m easily able to trade the daily time frame and swing trade the markets without it affecting my life in a negative way. I know a successful fund manager that also applies this process. He makes himself ready for the charts every 4 hours, day and night, so he sits on the markets for about 1 hour per day, spread across the 24-hour period. If you’re looking to be in forex trading for the long haul, make sure it works for you and your life – don’t make too many sacrifices!

Choosing A Prop Firm That Suits Your Trading Style.

Now you know the pros and cons of the various trading styles, it’s time to choose a forex prop firm that suits your chosen style. This is really important and often overlooked. I, as a profitable swing trader, would struggle to ever work with a prop firm that has a 30-day challenge and requires a minimum profit threshold each month. Some months I make a profit, and some months I’m flat by the end of the month.

So, what do you need to be looking for…

Swing Traders – You need to find a prop firm with no maximum trading days, a scaling plan, overnight holding, weekend holding, and live trading capital. For swing traders, I’d recommend checking us out at Lux Trading Firm. We’ve funded swing traders around the world with live trading capital!

Day Traders – You’d want to find a prop firm with good leverage, capital scaling, realistic drawdown threshold, strong profit share, and real trading capital. Again, it’s worth checking out Lux Trading Firm as no other firms in the industry are currently offering real trading capital.

Regardless of what trading style you choose to use, you need to create a trading plan. Have a read of this resource, detailing how to create a forex trading plan for prop firm trading!

In Conclusion – What Is The Best Trading Style To Pass A Prop Firm Challenge?

In summary, the best trading style to pass a prop firm challenge is the style that suits your lifestyle. For many professionals and busy folks, this is going to be swing trading. Although day trading seems like it can be much more lucrative, which it can, it’s much harder to succeed in and has a much higher failure rate than swing trading. Likewise, although swing trading seems like a much slower alternative, it’s easier to succeed in this space and you won’t have to sacrifice your life to do so – a win-win!

Can You Trade Forex While Working Full Time?

To trade in a full-time job for the life of a day trader is very much the dream of a lot of people.

However, for the majority of traders, it’s all about fitting their day job into the picture. If this is done effectively, you’re looking at a very lucrative pursuit.

Trading forex part-time can lead to huge deals. When this is combined with the income derived from an average day job, it can seem like day trading part-time on the forex market while working a full-time job is a no-brainer.

But can trading Forex seriously be done in the long term?

First of all, one thing that needs to be made clear.

Many people work very hard at forex trading on a part-time basis every day and this eats into their home life. You can make money trading on the foreign exchange but it is not an easy task. The commitment required to become a quality trader on a part-time basis can be stressful but extremely rewarding.

It’s important that your heart is very much in it. So, consider starting off with our popular Trading for Beginners course. Cut your learning curve in half and get expert guidance on how to start trading the world’s financial markets.

Make sure you’re committed to more than just the idea.

Going into trading can be a real challenge if you don’t walk into it with a clear plan and system for trading.

To make the thing work every day, you have to find a system that you know gets results. Wherever that system comes from, it has brought you success.

… you have to find a system that you know gets results.

So stick to it if you want to become a part-time forex trader.

Your main aim with trading while having a full-time job is to supplement your income. One sure-fire way of this is to make sure that you get that income boost by laying the correct foundations in strategy. The finer points of that strategy and the successful areas should be the only things that concern you.

With a real need to create a legitimate second income on the volatile foreign exchange for example, sticking to the stuff that works will bring you confidence, and the money.

Use your time and the weekends.

Even though you are working full time, you still need to focus on making sure that you use the time wisely.

As many people who work from home soon find out, any time wasted is money wasted. And that means that you can lose money if you aren’t organised with good time management. This is the same if you’re juggling currency pairs or day trading stocks.

The more trading you do, the easier it is to waste time.

Needless to say, making sure you spend each hour wisely is an essential skill in day trading.

But there’s a caveat …

The more trading you do, the easier it is to waste time .

Many part-time forex traders find that the weekends are the perfect times to build out a trading plan for example. And then all they have to do as the working week begins is follow that plan so that they have the minimum amount of daily work to do.

Audit your time.

This is one of the most important aspects of trading, but it is even more vital that you get it right if you are working a full-time job.

Take a look at your week and find parts of the week that are just taking up time for little to no reason.

These episodes have no place in your trading strategy.

Expert tip.

A weekly gathering with your friends.

Of course, it’s important that you have a social life (and perhaps essential if you are working so hard), but it might be worth considering cancelling 1 in 4 nights so that you grab some extra hours within which you can trade.

And if that isn’t possible, there are certainly some other windows of time in which you can make savings, and focus on buying and selling.

And here’s another example:

If you stop off for a coffee on the way to work and you always take fifteen minutes to read the free newspaper.

Consider changing this a little.

Cut these two actions out of your routine and you are already saving over an hour. While this may seem like a small saving it is still time that you could be using to research markets or to trade.

Keep a Trading Journal.

With a 9 to 5 job on your hands, it’s easy to lose track of important information on markets and currencies for example.

Start by keeping a journal that notes all aspects of your trades and therefore allows you to make mistakes and learn from them, you will give yourself that extra level of protection. You’ll make fewer mistakes, here’s a handy template journal you can use to your advantage.

Working a full-time job means you can’t afford to make mistakes unless you want to remain in the ranks of the less successful, casual traders. You literally do not have the time to work through the problems, spot the right course of action and then move accordingly.

However, at the same time, mistakes will happen to some degree. To combat the problem, write as many notes as you can about your trading experience. This keeps your info close at hand, and also makes sure that you’re always learning.

How to lose money.

While you can be a profitable trader overall, you will inevitably lose money on trades sometimes.

This is true for full-time traders as well as the most casual day trader. However, this should be factored into your mindset. By recognising that losses occur, you will keep that objectivity.

It is also advisable that you think carefully and prepare yourself adequately if you are thinking of working as a trader in your part-time hours. This means making sure that you have a savings buffer so that you can stop any financial issues before they become unmanageable.

To commit to any trading requires that you know what you are doing. To ensure this is the case, we recommend that you, learn to trade the financial markets.

Mastering the stop loss.

It goes without saying that traders have to be clear and firm with the stop loss principle. This is perhaps especially true with part-time work because at some point you will simply not be there when things go south.

You could put in 23 hours a day on a trading strategy and still face catastrophe if there’s a huge downswing and you haven’t got the insurance a stop loss provides. Trading from home is great fun and challenging enough to keep you engaged for years, but it’s not a game of chance.

Protect your money and make sure the stop loss is never something you overlook.

So, what’s next?

As you are most probably aware, trading can be done at any time of the day, so doing it part-time is very possible.

A part-time forex trader can have a very lucrative side income if they are prepared and organised. However, working a day job for eight hours and then finding the time to trade from home requires plenty of discipline and common sense.

Anyone can do it, as long as they prepare and work hard.

Picking a Forex Strategy 5 Best Forex Trading Strategies Best Forex Brokers for Trading How to Get Started Trading Forex Frequently Asked Questions.

Picking a Forex Strategy.

Picking a forex strategy is one of the most important things you can do to help assure your profitability as a currency trader, so you will definitely want to choose a successful strategy.

You’ll also want to select a strategy that best suits your lifestyle and personality type — not everyone wants to watch trading screens all day or is suited for the stress of fast-paced or high-risk strategies.

Once you’ve decided on one or more forex strategy options, you should check out how they perform. First, test each strategy via backtesting, which can be done with the popular MetaTrader forex platforms if you have modest programming skills.

Vet your strategy in a demo account that most online brokers will allow you to open without risk. If any strategies still look profitable, you can start trading them in a live account for the ultimate test.

It’s usually best to start with smaller trades and then work your way up to larger amounts as you gain confidence in the strategy’s performance and your ability to implement it in a disciplined way when trading live.

5 Best Forex Trading Strategies.

Many successful strategies for trading forex exist, but not all of them are suitable for every trader. Select a strategy that best suits your particular situation, including your available time, personality type and risk tolerance. These are covered below based on the typical time involved, ranging from short to long term.

1. Scalping.

Scalping is a very short-term trading strategy that involves taking multiple small profits on trading positions with a very short duration. Scalpers need ultra quick reaction times because they usually enter and exit trades in just seconds or minutes. This very fast paced and a rather stressful activity that may not suit everyone.

Scalpers also closely monitor price charts for patterns that can help them predict future exchange rate movements. They tend to use very short-term tick charts similar to that shown below for EUR/USD for analysis. Scalpers generally do best using a broker with tight spreads, quick guaranteed order executions and minimal or 0 order slippage.

2. Day Trading.

Day trading is another short-term trading strategy that is followed only during a particular trading session. Day traders generally do not take overnight positions, so they close out all trades each day. This helps reduce exposure to market movements when the trader is inattentive to the market.

Most day traders use trading plans based on technical analysis on short-term charts that show intraday price action. Many day trading strategies exist, but a popular one, is known as breakout trading. Trades get triggered when the exchange rate moves beyond a given level on the chart for a currency pair and are confirmed when accompanied by an increase in volume.

The 30-minute candlestick chart of GBP/USD shows a breakout below the level of the lower of the 2 converging trend lines of a triangle pattern drawn in red. Note that trading volume also increased when the breakout occurred, thereby confirming it.

3. News Trading.

Some forex traders with deep pockets and a decent appetite for risk might use news trading strategies, although they are probably not ideal for forex beginners. These strategies can be based on fundamental and technical analysis and they generally benefit from the notable volatility often seen in the forex market immediately after key news releases.

News traders typically need to monitor economic calendars for key data releases. They then watch the market closely before the event to determine key support and resistance levels so that they can react quickly after the event based on the results. News traders need to maintain strict discipline when managing their currency positions during such fast markets and often place stop-loss and take profit orders in the market.

An example of an economic calendar and a data release event that a news trader might use is U.S. unemployment claims. This data was especially volatile during the COVID-19 shutdown in the U.S. and created considerable fluctuations in the forex market after its release. Although those jobs numbers were dismal, what mattered most to the market is how the result differed from the market’s consensus.

In the situation below, the previous unemployment claims number was 3,176K, the expected number was 2,500K, and the result was worse than expected at 2,981K. This should have put pressure on the U.S. dollar after its release versus other currencies.

4. Swing or Momentum Trading.

Swing trading, sometimes also known as momentum trading, consists of a medium-term trading strategy that aims to capture more market moves. Swing traders do this by trading both with major trends and also against them when the market is correcting, so they should be willing to hold overnight positions.

Swing traders tend to focus on entering and existing positions based on momentum indicators that provide buy and sell signals. Traders use them to find overbought or oversold markets they can sell or buy. Swing traders might also buy ahead of support or sell before resistance levels that develop on the charts of the exchange rate for a currency pair.

Some commonly used momentum indicators include the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram and the relative strength index (RSI). The daily candlestick chart shown below for the GBP/USD exchange rate also displays the MACD and RSI in indicator boxes.

5. Trend Trading.

Trend trading is a popular longer-term forex trading strategy that involves following the prevailing trend or directional movement in the market for a particular currency pair. This strategy often involves buying on pullbacks in up trends or selling on rallies in down trends.

After a trend trader has taken a position in the direction of the trend, you will probably hold onto it until the market reaches their objective or the trend starts reversing. Trend traders often use trailing stop loss orders to guard their profits if a significant reversal materializes.

Many trend traders use technical analysis indicators like the Average Directional Movement Indicator (ADX) and/or moving averages that smooth out the price action so they can better identify trends. They might also use longer and shorter term moving averages and watch for crossovers to signal a potential reversal.

The 4-hour candlestick chart for EUR/JPY below shows an upward trend in progress after a significant decline with a 10-day moving average shown in red and the ADX in the indicator box underneath.

Why Trading the Daily Chart Will Make You A Better Trader.

Today we will be discussing what I believe is the most important time frame that a forex trader should consult before executing any trade. What I am referring to is the daily timeframe chart.

The daily chart provides a host of valuable information that should not be overlooked. After reading this article, you should have a solid understanding of why the daily chart is a trader’s best friend, and how you can incorporate the daily timeframe into your own methodology.

Download the short printable PDF version summarizing the key points of this lesson…. Click Here To Download.

How to Trade the Daily Charts.

Whether you are a short term day trader or an intermediate term swing trader, you should always refer to the daily timeframe chart as part of your daily market analysis each morning. The daily chart is the most watched timeframe by professional hedge funds, dealing banks, large traders, and other major market players that can normally move markets.

The forex daily chart provides a currency trader with an indispensable overall market view from which they can create a long side or short side directional bias. This is valuable information that will help you stay on the right side of the market.

Your daily chart analysis with allow you to gauge whether there is more buying or selling pressure in the market, and also help you avoid buying into major resistance zones and selling into major support zones. You should analyze the last few months of price action on the daily timeframe and ask relevant questions about the current market conditions such as:

Is the market trending, if so in what direction?

Is the market consolidating, if so where is the high and low range?

Where it the next higher resistance level?

Where is the next lower support level?

Are there any patterns emerging on the chart?

Are we close to a weekly pivot point or important round number?

Where is the 50 and 200 period Moving Average relative to current price?

Make sure that while you are going thru your checklist of questions, that you are simultaneously marking the chart with key S/R levels and other important considerations that will help you form a long, short or neutral market bias.

Once you have gone this this exercise, and formed an opinion based on your sound analysis, then you will be trading from a more informed standpoint. As a result, you will be more comfortable taking trades without constantly second guessing yourself.

More Reliable Price Action Patterns.

Many new traders that come into the forex market tend to gravitate towards very short term trading and day trading. One of the reasons for this is that these traders believe that by trading the lower timeframes they have more opportunities available to them to trade, and thus they can generate more profit in the long run.

Although in theory this type of thinking may sound logical, it is really just a trading myth and one that leads many traders astray. You must understand the fact that support and resistance levels, chart patterns, candlestick patterns, and other technical signals on the larger timeframes such as the daily forex charts and weekly charts are much more reliable than on the lower timeframes. Price action is smoother on the daily chart and you can generally get a real sense of where the market is trying to go. This is quite a bit harder to do consistently on the smaller timeframes.

When utilizing an end of day trading strategy, you will be able to assess your risk vs reward in a much higher probability manner than you would otherwise on say an hourly, or 15 minute chart. The supply and demand swings that are created on the daily chart are by far more accurate than lower time frames in general. Having a solid sense of the true potential profit vs risk on a trade as shown on the daily chart will put you miles ahead of other retail traders that bypass this type of analysis.

Trade Less, Make More.

One of the simplest things that a trader can do to improve their trading almost overnight, is by switching to a higher timeframe. If you are trading based on the 15 minute, 30 minute, or 60 minute chart, try to move up to the 240 minute, 480 minute or daily chart for eod trading (end of day trading).

There are several advantages of this. Firstly as we mentioned earlier, the technical signals and patterns that emerge on these higher timeframes are much more reliable and worthy of your attention than the patterns you encounter on the lower timeframes. Many times what might appear to be a chart pattern or candle stick pattern on the 1 hour chart is simply nothing more than market noise. But a chart pattern that progresses over several weeks on the daily timeframe is certainly something that you should be keeping a keen eye on.

A second reason that trading daily charts in forex is much more desirable, and one that is much less talked about is the cost of trading advantage. Remember, your broker’s dealing spreads and commissions are the same whether you are looking to make a trade for a 20 pip profit or one with a 200 pip profit.

For example, if you are looking to put on a trade for the USDCHF pair and it has a dealing spread of 2 pips, then you would wind up paying 10% of the profit on a 20 pip target vs 1% of the profit on a 200 pip target. Now that’s a huge difference in cost. As such, if you are a very short term trader, you should not under estimate the negative effects that this could have on your bottom line over the long run.

Put a Lid on Overtrading.

There are some traders that have yet to learn the benefits of trading daily charts, while there are other traders that do understand the advantages of trading the daily chart, but have other issues that need to be dealt with altogether.

Some traders are addicted to the action of trading, and have a psychological need to get in and out of the market constantly. Its like an adrenaline rush that they just cannot shake. This type of overtrading can obviously be counter productive and lead to inferior results or worse could cause them to blow up their accounts eventually.

There are other traders that tend to micro manage everything and as a result they are constantly watching their position tick by tick, overanalyzing the charts, and scaling in and out of positions. These traders are hype active, and have a very hard time just putting on a trade based on their forex daily analysis and letting the market do its thing. These traders feel as if they must be in control at all times. They are also usually emotionally charged traders that tend to trade rather irrationally based on gut feelings.

The best advice that I can give to any trader that has a hard time controlling their emotions in the market is to try a “Set and Forget” Trade management approach. What this means is that you should enter your Stop loss and Take profit target the moment that you place your entry, and then just simply step away from the computer screen.

With some practice, a trader can become much more disciplined in the market utilizing this type of effective hands off approach.

Reduce Risk and Leverage.

Every trader should have a detailed Risk Management plan in place. Within the risk management plan, you should address things such as the average risk per trade you will take, the Risk to Reward ratio that you will be looking for, how you will deal with drawdowns, and the maximum amount of leverage you will use.

Some novice traders have come to believe that they are not able to trade off the daily charts because they would have to place a stop loss at a relatively large pip distance compared to what they would on a smaller time frame. And therefore, they would be risking too much relative to their small account if they do so.

This assumption is wholly incorrect. Even though the average daily range for a currency pair will be much higher than the average hourly or four hour range, the only thing that a trader needs to do in this case, is to reduce the position size to adjust for the potentially larger stop loss. And thus, by doing so you will in effect, reduce your effective leverage which will in turn reduce your overall risk exposure in the market.

Again keep in mind that the primary job of a trader is risk management above all else. And one way that we can reduce risk is by reducing our leverage.

Let’s illustrate the point with a comparison.

Scenario A : Long 1 lot EURUSD with a 30 Pip Stop ( $ 300 risk )

Scenario B : Long 0.2 lot EURUSD with 150 Pips Stop ( $ 300 risk )

Both Scenario A and Scenario B have the same $ 300 at risk but in A we are trading a full lot and with B we are trading 0.2 lot. And so, Scenario B is using 1/5 the leverage of Scenario A.

Now lets say we take each position on Friday and hold it over the weekend. And assume at the new week’s opening the EURUSD opens 200 pips lower on a weekend gap down.

Well if this were to occur, Scenario A would have lost $ 2000 while Scenario B would have lost just $ 400 in comparison. That’s a big disparity and due to the effects of leverage. You should consider that the next time you feel that the stop loss on your daily forex signals is preventing you from trading on it.

Finding Real Trends in the Market.

In trading, you should always try to follow the path of least resistance. This means that if a market is moving in a particular direction, odds favor the continuation of price in that direction, until the weight of evidence to the contrary proves otherwise.

Using a daily forex chart for technical analysis can guide you in analyzing real trends in the market. When looking at daily fx charts to find trends, you want to make sure that you are looking at the right amount of data. Typically, you would want to analyze the prior 120 to 150 daily bars on the price chart. This is a rough guideline, but has worked well for me as my forex daily strategy for analyzing potential market trends.

Here are a few simple techniques for finding emerging and established trends in the market using the daily chart.

Swing High and Lows – During an uptrend, the market will make higher highs, and higher lows. Conversely during a downtrend, the market will make lower lows and lower highs.

50 and 200 Period SMA – The two most watched moving averages on the daily chart are the 50 period and 200 period Simple Moving Averages. Compare where price is relative to these averages, and watch out for times when price crosses these levels, as it could be a prelude to future price moves.

Trendlines – As simple as they are, trendlines are invaluable when it comes to trend identification and potential reversal points. Be on the lookout for breakout closes outside the trend line as this could be an early warning signal of a reversal taking place.

Top Down Trading Approach.

Trading using a Top down analysis approach is something that every aspiring trader should get in the habit of doing. With this type of analysis you would typically start by analyzing the longer time frames such as the monthly or weekly charts. Then you would move down to the daily chart. Only after you have done this would you start your analysis of the intraday charts such as the 240 minute, 60 minute or lower.

A multiple time frame approach can help a trader in trade selection and in filtering out potentially bad trades. One of the most important timeframes to consider in a multi time frame analysis is the daily chart. This is where the major participants do most of their analysis and as such where you will find some of the best Support and Resistance levels to trade off of.

Most professional traders will want to know what is happening on the daily timeframe regardless of what their trading timeframe is. Whether you are a day trader or swing trader, you would want to try to trade in the direction of the momentum as seen on the daily chart.

If you only rely on one time frame to trade, your trading timeframe, you are trading with a handicap and reducing the chances of a successful outcome on your trade. For example, You could be trading directly into a Key S/R level, or the trend on your trading timeframe is just a correction, or you are trading against a candlestick reversal pattern on the daily chart, or a whole host of other unforeseen technical events that you could be ignoring.

Swing Trading Opportunities.

Now that we have had an in depth discussion on some of the benefits for utilizing the daily time frame chart, lets discuss the importance of combining the daily chart for overall market bias and using the 240 minute chart to look for technical signals and in fine tuning your trade entry.

The combination of the daily chart for trend identification and the 240 minute chart to find trade opportunities and fine tune entries is generally considered a swing trading approach. Swing traders typically hold trades from 2 days to about 7 days or so. The swing trading timeframe provides ample opportunity for traders to engage with the market on a regular basis, while keeping transaction costs to a minimum. In that regard it is the best of both worlds when comparing it to day trading or long term position trading.

Here’s one way that a swing trader might combine the two timeframes into a logical strategy. He can start by plotting all major levels on the daily chart including S/R levels, Supply and Demand Zones, and Fibonacci levels. This serves as his big picture levels. Then he could zoom down to the 240 minute chart to analyze price interaction at these levels. This serves as his trade entry timeframe.

He may look for a strong price rejection in the form of a reversal candlestick pattern or a strong breakout thru these key higher time frame levels. He can then quickly make an assessment and act accordingly. With this approach, the trader is taking into consideration both the price action on the longer timeframe daily chart along with the price action on the shorter term 240 minute chart. This combination will serve to provide higher probability trade setups for this swing trader.

Additional Advantages of Using the Daily Chart.

Here are some a few additional ways that trading the daily time frame will improve your results:

Trade Part Time – There is no requirement for you to be a full time trader or watch the computer screen all day to be an effective trader. In fact, as we have pointed out throughout this lesson, trading less can often lead to better results. And as an added bonus, you can also keep your day job so that you always have that income source coming in for yourself.

Learn To be Disciplined – Trading is one of the hardest things that you can do. And one reason for this is that what feels good in trading is often the wrong thing to do. Our human element works against us in trading, especially when we are too active in the markets. The daily chart helps us to step back a bit and forces us to trade less.

Taking the Cream of the Crop trades – There is no doubt that price action and patterns that appear on the daily chart are some of the most reliable of any timeframe. When we see a formation on the daily chart, the chances of success are much higher and we can be more confident that the pattern is real and not just smoke and mirrors.

Conclusion.

Throughout this article, we have stressed the importance of incorporating the Daily time frame chart into your own trading. In fact, switching from a lower time frame mindset to a higher time frame mindset is the single fastest, most effective way to increase you win rate and overall profitability.

I would challenge you to do a manual or computerized backtest of your strategy and run it on the daily chart, and then compare those results to lower timeframes such as the 60 min or 30 min. I am willing to bet that you will see better results on the daily bars test in an overwhelming majority of cases.

Aside from the obvious financial benefits of trading the daily timeframe, the psychological benefits should not be under estimated. You will spend less time glued to your computer screen, watching every up and down tick. You can benefit from having a Set and Forget type of trade management approach and ultimately learn to detach the all important process of trading from the not so important outcome from any particular trade.

I hope that this lesson has proved useful to you, but remember that all the knowledge in the world is useless, unless you internalize it and more importantly begin to start taking action on it for yourself.

End of Day Forex Trading: How to Find Signals and Potential Breakouts.

In trading, timing is everything . You might be able to anticipate market changes, but if you don’t know when those changes are scheduled to occur and how to time your entry and exit points accordingly, you aren’t bound to reap the reward. The most reliable and profitable forex strategies are those that consider timing as it relates to the trader’s chosen market, strategy, and trading style.

End-of-day trading is a deliberate forex strategy in which traders choose to place trade orders after the New York stock market has closed for the day. This allows them to outline their strategy and create pending orders for the next day while time is effectively paused (i.e., when no trades are occuring).

The Benefits of End-of-Day Trading.

After the market has closed, traders are free to review changes in price action that occurred, analyse closing price candlesticks, and interpret any signals that manifested during the day with greater clarity and context.

The two greatest benefits of end-of-day trading are the added context and flexibility that this strategy provides. Without the pressure of responding to price movement in real time, you can conduct various technical analyses to identify trend strength and momentum, establish support and resistance levels, and confirm the validity of buy and sell signals before acting. Doing so allows you to lay out a more deliberate trading strategy and place orders with greater precision based on the insight you’ve gathered. By focusing on daily price action charts rather than on intra-daily charts, it’s also easier to identify overarching market trends that will affect long-term trading outcomes.

In addition to these strategic benefits, end-of-day trading also has practical appeal in that it doesn’t require you to manually enter orders during trading hours. In other words, it makes it possible to hold a day job and still execute a deliberate and informed trading strategy. Outlining your orders before the beginning of the trading day also forces you to preemptively weigh risks and rewards and place orders and profit targets that coincide with your ideal risk-to-reward ratio, regardless of how the market moves. This removes some of the emotion from trading and allows you to establish a consistent strategy and track the results of your decisions.

How End-of-Day Trading Strategies Work.

First and foremost, end-of-day trading demands a thorough understanding of the market and the current trend. If you know how the market usually behaves and can identify the strength and momentum of the current trend, you have a solid framework in which to assess buy and sell signals and determine ideal entry and exit points for the upcoming day.

Identifying the Trend and Determining Your Position.

End-of-day trading is easiest in trending markets that oscillate between long uptrends and long downtrends and reverse after reaching established overbought and oversold levels. Using trend-following, trend-confirming, and overbought and oversold indicators, you can gauge if a strong trend is under way and place pending orders that coincide with the direction of the current trend. That would mean taking a bullish position in an uptrend and a bearish position in a downtrend.

If, on the other hand, your technical analysis reveals that price is reaching overbought and oversold conditions or that a divergence has occurred between price movement and market momentum, you may decide to place a limit entry order that goes against the current trend at the anticipated market pivot point. For example, if price is in an uptrend and you’re expecting a reversal, you would place a sell limit entry order above the current price at the anticipated pivot point, as illustrated.

In addition to trading with the current trend or anticipating reversals, it’s also possible to use a grid trading strategy to capitalize on trend breakouts. A grid trading strategy places buy and sell orders at set intervals above and below the current market price, eliminating the need to know what direction the breakout will take.

When using a grid trading strategy, however, it’s exceptionally important to close out pending orders that weren’t triggered and be diligent about placing stop-loss orders as well as profit targets, as illustrated in the following chart.

Placing Stop Loss Orders.

Stop loss orders help mitigate risks by limiting losses in the event that the trend moves against your expectations. Stops can be fixed-value or can change relative to price movement, or what’s known as trailing stops. After you’ve decided what position to take and placed corresponding stop entry or limit entry orders, the next part of any end-of-day trading strategy involves placing stop loss orders for each position opened. For a bearish stop entry order placed above the current market price, you should create a corresponding sell stop loss order below the current market price, as shown in the graph (Trading with an Uptrend)..

For limit entry orders, a stop loss order should be placed in the same direction as the buy or sell limit entry order to curb losses in the event that the trend continues rather than reverses, as shown in the next graph.

When determining how far away from price to place stop entry, limit entry, and stop loss orders, take support and resistance levels into account along with the location of buy and sell signals and the amount of risk you’re willing to shoulder. The most successful strategies are realistic and use technical analysis to confirm ideal entry and exit points.

Keeping Tabs on Your Trades.

Once you’ve placed all your pending orders for the following day, your orders will automatically be triggered the next day without the need for any manual action. That said, it’s important to revisit your positions at the end of the next trading day to evaluate if they’re still valid based on the most recent price movement. A trailing stop will shift position relative to price movement, but other entries and exits may need to be manually closed or adjusted to account for shifting risk and reward levels. For the best results, makes sure your strategy has the appropriate checks and balances and frequently monitor results and reevaluate your positions in light of new insight.

Contra o uso do X.

Porém, o uso do pronome neutro vai além disso.

Day forex trading 1

50 Pips A Day Forex Day Trading Strategy.

The 50 pips a day forex strategy was developed to trade some of the major currency pairs. Traders use this technique to spot the early market move of the trading instrument. As a rule, the strategy mainly applies to EUR/USD or GBP/USD. However, you are free to make experiments in an effort to integrate it with other traded assets.

The main benefit for beginners is the fact that Forex trading 50 pips do not require in-depth research or market analysis. It is very simple to uptake although you are still supposed to understand how various indicators work as well as how to read different trading charts or patterns.

Getting started with the 50 pips a day forex strategy.

The first thing you need to know before setting up the 50 pips a day trading strategy is the fact that it was developed for day traders. If you were a swing trader, you would rather prefer using in-depth technical analysis with oscillators and other indicators that ensure a clear vision of the market moves in the long run instead of shirt timeframes.

As mentioned earlier, beginners will not need complex indicators or price patterns to use the strategy. On the other hand, baseline risk-management tools will come in handy. We will discuss them a bit further. While we are talking of major currency pairs to trade, the steps to get started are as follows:

Open the daily chart. Look for the currency pair with a good daily range. Capture 1/3-1/2 of the daily range for a chosen currency pair.

Now, let's see how to set up the 50 pips a day Forex trading strategy.

Setting up the 50 pips strategy.

To make things easier for you and save your time, we will indicate all the major things you will need to configure your trading tactics. With this particular strategy, you should use the 7 a.m. GMT candlestick that is plotted on the 1-hour Forex trading chart. Do not forget to specify the correct time zone depending on your location.

Additional instruments you may and may not need:

Forex trading 50 pips does not require Forex indicators, as it mainly refers to price action tactics. They have nothing to deal with indicators. The 1-hour chart is the general timeframe to use. However, you may opt for other ones depending on your location and time zone. The strategy works mainly for major currency pairs like GBP/USD or EUR/USD. These are the best ones to start with. Later, you can experiment with other pairs as well.

Essential Rules when using the 50 pips a day strategy.

Now when we have everything needed for the 50 pips a day Forex trading strategy, we can actually start trading. To make the most of the tactics, traders should keep in mind several essential rules that refer to a chosen technique. Here are some of the most important ones:

Wait for 7 a.m. GMT candlestick to close and immediately open buy stop order (2 pips above the high) and sell stop orders (2 pips below the low). The price will move towards high or low and activate one of the pending orders. Then, you may cancel the another order. To manage risks, use a stop-loss order placed from 5 to 10 pips above the high or low of the candlestick. Traders may increase or decrease the distance to the stop-loss depending on the candlestick length. The profit target should be set to 50 pips. Repeat the process the next day.

If your trades bring you to profit steadily, you can use the strategy each day. However, if the results are floating, you need to exit the trade by the end of the day.

Risk-management for forex trading 50 pips a day.

The strategy is not as flexible as some may think. It was initially designed for day trading. It means that swing traders will hardly benefit from this antique. They are supposed to use technical indicators and analysis instead. To reduce the potential risk, using stop-loss orders is definitely a good idea.

Consejo 3: aprenda a investigar acciones.
